QR Codes: To Scan or Not to Scan?

You’ve probably seen them on posters, window displays – and maybe even business cards. QR codes, a type of square-shaped matrix barcodes, have been used for years by the auto industry, but just recently they’ve gained steam in the marketing world. Are you ready to use one for your business?
First, let’s talk about how they work. QR (or quick response) codes use unique two-dimensional black patterns on a white background to connect people with more information about a brand, topic or event. To access that information, a consumer needs to have a QR-reader app on his or her iPhone, Android or other camera-ready smartphone or tablet. Many newer Android and BlackBerry models come equipped with those apps, but iPhones, iPads and other devices will have plenty of free options for download.
How can someone take advantage of a QR code? With the app open, the shopper can hold the phone’s camera up to the code and let the camera lock onto the image. Once the phone locks onto the image, the website, video or data linked to the code should appear. One point of note: many people think QR codes can be activated by taking a plain old camera picture. But it’s the app that does the work!
You can add a QR code to places like these:
- Business cards
- Receipts
- Brochures and flyers
- Product tags
- Menus
- The sides of cars and trucks
Try using a QR code generator like Kaywa (http://qrcode.kaywa.com/) if you’re ready to give it a go. Be sure to define the purpose of your efforts (like boosting sales or promoting your new website), and make your call to action clear. You could say something like “Scan this code for our best discounts” or “Scan this code to get a free eBook.” Make it fun.
